Pontal

Across the river mouth from town, where the Rio de Contas meets the sea. Boats, mangrove and the view back at Itacaré.

Pontal sits on the far side of the Rio de Contas where the river meets the sea, and getting across is part of the point: small boats run the crossing and it takes minutes. What you get on the other side is calm water, mangrove, and the best view of Itacaré there is, which is the town seen from the water with the forest behind it.

It is a different register from the surf beaches. The water here is river meeting ocean rather than open Atlantic, which makes it gentler and makes it a good afternoon when the swell is too big to enjoy anywhere else.

The river is a subject of its own, and it is covered along with the forest and the falls in waterfalls, river and forest.

Places appear here once we have been and checked them. That takes a visit, so this list grows slowly on purpose.
