Where to stay

Pick the neighbourhood first

In a town this size the building matters less than the ten minutes around it. Choose where you want to wake up, then choose the bed.

The neighbourhoods

What each one buys you, and what it costs you

Centro and Pituba

First time, no car, wants to walk to everything

The old town and the restaurant street. Everything is a walk away: the bus stop, the agencies, the bars, the first beaches.

Trade offIt is the loudest place to sleep, especially at the weekend and in high season.

Praia da Concha

Couples, families, anyone who wants to swim before breakfast

Ten minutes on foot from the centre and a different pace entirely. Calm water, a row of barracas, and quiet at night.

Trade offYou walk back up the hill after dinner, which is less charming in the rain.

Resende and Tiririca

Surfers and anyone who wants the sea outside the door

Along the run of surf beaches south of the point. Walk out with a board, walk back for lunch.

Trade offFewer places to eat within reach, so evenings mean heading back into town.

Serra Grande and the south

Long stays, quiet, people with a car

Further down the coast, greener and emptier. This is where people go when they are staying for months rather than days.

Trade offYou need wheels. Without them you are dependent on the bus and it does not run late.

By trip

Tell us who is coming

  • On your own

Stay in the centre for the first few nights. It is the easiest place to fall into company, and everything you need is within a walk.

    Centro and Pituba

  • Two of you

Concha buys you quiet without cutting you off. Ten minutes and you are back in the noise when you want it.

    Praia da Concha

  • With children

Sheltered water matters more than anything else. Concha at the near end is the obvious choice, and the walk into town is short enough to abandon halfway.

    Praia da Concha

  • Here to surf

Sleep on the beaches south of the point so you can look at the sea before deciding anything. The swell runs best from about June to November.

    Resende and Tiririca

  • Staying a month or more

Rent by the month rather than the week, and ask about internet before anything else. Serra Grande if you want quiet, the centre if you want people.
