Itacaré

Eat and drink

The town runs on a weekly clock

Where to eat in Itacaré depends less on what you feel like than on what night it is. Monday and Saturday are different towns.

The week

What each night is like

  • MonTonight

    Monday

Quietest night of the week. Kitchens close early out of season.

  • Tue

    Tuesday

Quiet. A good night for the places that fill up later in the week.

  • Wed

    Wednesday

The town starts to wake up. First live music of the week in high season.

  • Thu

    Thursday

Busy on Rua Pedro Longo. Tables outside fill from about eight.

  • Fri

    Friday

Full. Live music in several places at once, and it runs late.

  • Sat

    Saturday

The big night. Forró, samba and pagode, and the street stays awake.

  • Sun

    Sunday

Long lunches on the beach, then an early and gentle evening.

Where the food is

Rua Pedro Longo, which everyone calls Pituba, is the restaurant street: one run of tables, bars and kitchens from the old town down towards the water. Everything else is spread along the beaches.

On the beach

Barracas serve through the day and stop when the sun goes. Fried fish, chilled coconut, cold beer. They wind down out of season, and some close entirely in the quiet months.

What to eat here

This is Bahia, so moqueca, acarajé and anything with dendê. The coast brings prawns and fish, and the hinterland brings cacao, which turns up in more places than you would expect.

Paying

Cash still matters. Card readers work most of the time in town and much less often on the beach, and the nearest reliable cash machines are in the centre.

The places

Where we send people

Every place we know of in town, with how to reach them. None has been visited by us yet, so there is no description and no recommendation here: those arrive with the visit, the photograph and the date.

These are the places we know are here, with how to reach them. We have not been to them yet, so there is nothing here pretending to be a review. As we visit, entries gain a photograph, a description and the date we checked.
